In Smokey and the Bandit, the premise of turning a glorified beer run into a cross-country chase accomplishes similar ends to this particular film's needs: by making the movie about beer being delivered to a party, it's both fun and relatively innocent. Once the bus is moving, and until it stops, the movie is in high gear. In Speed, the premise is brilliant because it creates a conceit that allows for a relentless level of tension - suspenseful scenes of a bus jumping over gaps of unfinished highway because it has nowhere else to go, the bus nearly dropping below fifty miles an hour several times - without having to create new set pieces to maintain that tension. On the surface, this doesn't sound as brilliantly innovative as Graham Yost's Speed script, but let's think about this for a minute. Justice only wants his dopey son's embarrassing wedding day avenged and he's willing to chase the Bandit all the way back to Georgia, if necessary. The Texas sheriff/father is played by none other than Gleason, who has no idea that the Bandit is running interception for Jerry Reed's speeding cemi. The plot thickens slightly from there, but thankfully remains appealingly water thin with Sally Field standing up a Texan sheriff's son at the alter, only to get picked up on the highway by Reynolds in his massive, swinging-dick of a Trans-Am. Why? Well, this particular politician wants what he can't have and the Bandit plans to give it to him.

Justice (Gleason), and every other cop along the way, in a series of high speed chases, so that a speeding cemi full of bootlegged Coors Light goes unnoticed. In Smokey, Reynolds' "Bandit" is hired to distract Sheriff Buford T. In De Bont's film, Keanu Reeves couldn't let a moving bus travel below fifty miles an hour, or else the bus and all its passengers would explode. The plot of Smokey is, in its own way, as brilliantly simple as Jan De Bont's Speed.
